Basically if the diet is based on eating mostly protein and no carbs, carbs and no protein or no fat it is not a healthy diet. It is also a fad diet if it is based on eating only one food such as a grapefruit only diet or fatty foods only diet. You just don't get all of the nutrition that you need eating this way. You need to eat a variety of foods in order to stay healthy. When your body is in starvation mode, it begins to use muscle for energy, not fat. This may cause a drop on the scale, but it's not good. Muscle burns more calories than fat and if you begin to lose muscle, then you'll lower your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the rate at which your body burns calories just doing nothing. When you begin to eat a higher level of calories, your body is no longer prepared to handle it, and you will gain weight again.

The thing is, sensible diet plans don't seem to be important with many of the fad diets. There are two main reasons that people want to lose weight - to both improve their health and/or to look better. They might lose weight short term on fad diets, but for the long term, the approach isn't always the healthiest.
